How to pass the Texas knowledge test

  1. Read the handbook. Every question comes from the official Texas manuals; the handbook page links to the agency's own copies.
  2. Practice test by test. Each numbered test mixes Texas law with the national road rules, like the real exam.
  3. Read every explanation. Especially for answers you got right by guessing.
  4. Simulate the real exam on the category page when you pass the tests comfortably.

Texas written test format

Test Questions Pass mark Minimum age
Car 30 21 correct (9 mistakes allowed) 15 years
Motorcycle 20 16 correct (4 mistakes allowed) 15 years
CDL 50 40 correct (10 mistakes allowed) 18 years

Car. A learner license is available from age 15 and an unrestricted Class C license from age 18. The DPS web site could not be reached on the verification date, so the item count and pass mark are working figures rather than confirmed data.

Motorcycle. The Department of Public Safety does not publish the length of the Class M knowledge test. Test preparation sources report 20 questions with 16 correct, which matches the 80 percent standard. The figure is listed as unconfirmed.

CDL. Texas may not issue a commercial driver license or commercial learner permit below age 18, and federal rules bar interstate commercial driving below age 21. The item count and pass mark are working figures.
